Researchers at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute videotaped 92 families with children under 1 year old during free-play sessions in their homes, then reviewed parents' speech patterns. Once the children turned 3, researchers checked their language skills. One of the main predictors of high scores was the number of different words fathers used, while mothers' speech didn't seem to have an effect.
